The Balearic Islands: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera,
Carbrera
The Balearic island chain is located in the Mediterranean Sea off
Spain's Eastern shore and is one of the foremost tourist areas in the
country especially during the summer months.
The five islands are
Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Carbrera.
Due to their climate, beaches and tourist installations, they are some
of the most prestigious and attractive places to "get away from it all"
in the entire Mediterranean.
Mallorca
the largest island, Majorca, is most famous for its beaches and
resorts. It has towering mountains in the northeast, beautiful caves in
the east, a picturesque coastline in addition to quaint villages. The
port of Majorca is one of the most important in the Mediterranean.
Majorca's principal city, Palma de Mallorca (or simply Palma), features
a Gothic cathedral, a 14th century Bellver Castle which offers a great
panorama of the area, the ancient "Lonja or market area, the Archbishops
Palace and the Monastery of St. Francis.
Menorca
is a lovely calm and unspoilt island of sand and sunshine plus many monuments, interesting coastal towns, and beaches.
The easy going island spirit and traditional ambience make Menorca the
ideal holiday destination for thousands of tourists each year. Families
taking time out enjoy the wonderful beaches and couples in need of a
romantic getaway all fall for the special allure of Menorca
Mahon is the capital city of Menorca, ome to the largest natural
harbours in Europe and a great place from which to explore the
whitewashed village of Binibeca or the famous caves of Xoroi which can
be reached by traversing the cliffside walkway overlooking the
Mediterranean
The Island of
Ibiza
is known for its wild nightlife, attracting clubbers from all over the
world.
Ibiza is not just known for its
partying ways and large portions of the island are
registered as U.N. World Heritage Sites, and absolutley
devoid of the bright lights of the main cities. Because
of its natural beauty, companies and artists alike
frequently use the island for photographic and film
shoots. "The Egg" monument has been erected in honour of
Christopher Columbus, can be found in Sant Antoni as
Ibiza is one of several places alleging to be his
birthplace.Outside of
the summer months the whole island is empty of tourists
and most clubs are not open . Tourists who plan to
travel to the island prior to June or after September
should expect a quiet time with plenty of rain. The
island is still considered to be beautiful, but tourists
coming for the night life may be disappointed, though
it's arguably a better time to explore the island
The Island of Ibiza is famous for its summer
parties, with thousands of people flooding in for the big summer club
nights. Famous clubs include Space, Pacha, Privilege (ex Ku), Amnesia,
DC10, Eden and Es Paradis. They are hosts to parties of international
fame such as Cream, Manumission, etc. It is also home to the 'West End'
party district of Sant Antoni, a rite of passage for many partygoers
The smaller, calmer island of
Formentera
also has nice beaches. Formentera consdiers
itself a real
island, as it does
not have an airport
and is only
accessible by sea. Formentera's
virtues. its
wonderful state of
preservation,
tranquillity,
etc.are largely
attributable to this
isolation.
Scuba diving is a
popular pass time on
the island due to
the crystal waters
that surround
Fortmentera.
This tiny island
of Formentera is
surprisingly popular
with two types of
tourist, those who
like everything
arranged for
them.and those that
don't. If you and
your family demand
activities all day
and all night such
as snorkelling,
windsrufing and
sailing, with the
beach lapping away
outside of your
window then
Formentera fits the
bill. However if you
like to explore and
discover hidden
villages, quiet
coves full of
naturists, beautiful
countryside
locations and
charming
restaurants, then
Formentera is still
for you
